Race Week: Ironman China
As I write this I look at the calendar and realize my planned departure date for Ironman China was Monday. Unfortunately that was before I injured my knee, which took me out of Ironman training for this year and possibly more. Every week-end for the past 2-1/2 months when I awake I think that if not for the injury I'd be getting up and riding 60-70-80-90 and finally 100 miles on that day. Most of those days I was a little sad that all I could do was go to my Masters swim work-out and participate in just 1/3 of our sport. Of course on a few of those early mornings it was cool and raining and to be honest I wasn't too upset to not be suiting up and heading out into a wet chill. But I do miss being in Ironman shape. I miss being able to eat as much as I like and then some. And I know how much I'll be missing by not going to Hainan.

Of course China has been in the news quite a bit lately and I hope that this does not spill over to the race. Not to get political but our sport is still very young and very vulnerable. This is the first time an Ironman race is being held in China and I think all triathletes would benefit from it being a successful race. I understand that the issue in Tibet is important as well but it's hard to imagine what will be gained by upsetting and insulting the Chinese hosts by trying to politicize the race.

I hope the best for all those doing the race and no matter what happens they are about to embark on a race of a lifetime. I can't wait to see the pictures and hear their stories. If you are one of them, good luck! Maybe I'll get a shot at it next year.
