Industry Feature: Cadence Cycling

By TJ Murphy

July 26, 2007
-- Just two blocks from the home of the Tribeca Film Festival, the New York City Cadence Cycling opened its doors in early July. Located on 174 Hudson Street, Cadence occupies a 10,200-foot space and is the second Cadence “Cycling and Multisport Center” in exisence. The first was launched in Philadelphia in 2004.

Matt Heitmann, president and co-founder of Cadence, says that the impulse to create Cadence came from his own disillusionment over traditional bike stores. “We were tired of dingy bike shops with poor service and bad attitudes. We wanted to create a completely difference atmosphere, and the number one thing is that we want to be service oriented and friendly, whether you spend five dollars or bike a complete bike.”

As the store’s title suggests, Cadence is not just a place to buy a bike, it’s a place to be coached. When you walk in to the Tribeca Cadence, you’ll see a sit-down cafe to your left, a stylish showroom floor to your right (bikes include BMC, Kuota, Cyfac and Cervelo) and a reading lounge.

On your first tour of the center, one of the most awesome displays is the primary training area: 24 Computrainers are wired into three huge theater screens on the main floor (also decked out with treadmills), a strength training room, and connected is a high-tech fitting room operated by the house exercise physiologist and cycling coach, Chad Butts.  Expected to be completed in the near future, an Endless Pool is being installed in the lower level with video. A locker room and a bicycle “valet” service are also offered to New Yorkers.

Cadence operates a training program that is both local and global in scope, and local athletes will have access to a class schedule and state-of-the art physiology testing. Mikael Hansen is the center’s triathlon coach and is in charge of performance testing.
