10 US athletes compete at ITU Winter Triathlon Worlds

March 5, 2007 -- Press Release: Ten athletes from the United States competed at the International Triathlon Union Winter Triathlon World Championships in Flassin, Italy on March 3-4.

In the men’s elite race, U.S. national champion Mike Kloser (Vail, Colo.) finished in 27th place in a time of 1:49:32. Spencer Powlison (Boulder, Colo.) followed in 28th (1:49:54), Brian Smith (Gunnison, Colo.) finished in 32nd (1:51:56) and Nat Ross (Golden, Colo.) rounded out the Americans in 35th (1:54:21).

On the women’s side, Gretchen Reeves (Boulder, Colo.) was the top American, finishing in 13th with a time of 2:09:02, while Heather Best (Fairbanks, Alaska) navigated the course in 2:16:33 for a 15th place finished. U.S. national champion Keri Nelson (Grand Junction, Colo.) did not finish the race.

For the age groupers, just three athletes competed. John Gilbert (Durango, Colo.) finished in 10th (1:13:27) in the men’s 45-49 age group, Jennifer Kerr (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) was 2nd (1:32:50) in the female 35-39 age group, and Lauren Wenzl (Niwot, Colo.) was 2nd (1:55:14) among the 45-49 women.

The weekend also featured an elite relay, with the U.S. men finishing in 8th out of nine teams in 1:40:15 and the women earning 5th out of five teams in 2:04:41.
