Announcing the City of Portland Triathlon
March 21, 2007 --
Press Release: One Million Revolutions and Oregon Trout are proud to announce the country’s newest major urban triathlon. The Oregon Trout City of Portland Triathlon, slated for Sep. 2, 2007, will be olympic distance (1.5km swim, 40km bike, 10km run) and limited to the first 1,000 entries in its inaugural year. The race will start and end in Waterfront Park, in the heart of downtown Portland, and include many of the city’s most scenic and historic features.
The Oregon Trout City of Portland Triathlon will be produced by the same director as the Musselman Triathlon, an annual classic held in Geneva, NY and this year hosting 1,400 athletes and one of the nation’s five ITU Pan American Cup races. The Portland event will adhere to the principles of Oregon’s largest and most progressive city: sustainability, creativity, responsibility to social and environmental ideals. The athlete experience will be large while our footprint is small.
The Oregon Trout City of Portland Triathlon will be the first event in the country to feature a medical tent staffed by naturopathic doctors. Athletes will receive event shirts made of 100% organic bamboo. All food will be locally sourced and organic, handcrafted traditional ales will be served, and equipment will be built from recycled materials. Special incentives will be provided for athletes arriving by bike or public transportation. Never before has this level of sustainability been attempted by a major sporting event.
A triathlon in downtown Portland would not be possible without the decades of work carried out by Oregon Trout, a Portland-based non-profit organization founded in 1983 to protect and restore native wild fish and the habitats that sustain them. Recognizing that clean water is as crucial to triathlon as it is to our very livelihood, Oregon Trout deeply supports the mission of this race through its title sponsorship. A portion of race proceeds will return to Oregon Trout to continue their mission.
Registration begins March 21, 2007 for individual, relay, and corporate relay divisions.
