SheRox Philadelphia Triathlon now open

March 26, 2007 -- Press Release: Registration for the SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon opened at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 23.  From the organizers of the highly acclaimed Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon in Fairmount Park, the SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon is a premier women’s triathlon that will take place in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park on Sunday, August 5, 2007.  The race includes a .8K (.5 mile) swim, 25K (15.5 mile) bike and a 5K (3.1 mile) run.  There will be a pre-race expo on Saturday, August 4 featuring women’s health and fitness exhibitors along with triathlon-related activities.

To create a premier race experience specifically for female athletes, the organizers of the SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon worked with an advisory group of women.  This group included everyone from those who have never done a triathlon before (but want to) to seasoned professional triathletes.  “These women were very excited about shaping the race experience, and provided us with a wealth of great ideas that we’ve incorporated into the event”, said Race Director Barb McKeever.  Based upon their recommendations, the SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon will include:

• A Free Mentor Program – Women preparing for their first triathlon often feel overwhelmed and nervous since they don’t know what to expect in training and on race day.  The SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon will provide every participant with the opportunity to sign up for a mentor.  “We want to ensure that every participant has a safe, fun and memorable experience, and our Mentor Program will help do just that” said Head Mentor, Erin Savarese.  Mentors, all Philadelphia-area female triathletes, will communicate with participants to provide information and guidance, answer questions and address individual concerns.

• Free Training Plans – The SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon has partnered with Active.com to offer free training plans to all race registrants.  Race participants can sign up for a beginner, intermediate or advanced plan, depending upon their race goals, fitness level and triathlon experience.  Schedules will be e-mailed to participants each night with their workout for the next day.

• Relay Teams – Recognizing that some women may not want or be able to complete the entire triathlon by themselves, the SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon offers the opportunity to participate as part of a relay team.  “Women enjoy sharing this kind of experience with friends and family, so we are encouraging them to form mother/daughter teams, teams with book club members, old college roommates, female co-workers or any other group they can think of” said SheROX Marketing Director Gretchen Cooney.

• Club Challenge - The SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon also includes a Club Challenge to encourage women to get fellow club members to participate.  Points will be awarded for top overall and age-group finishes, as well as just for participation.  The team with the most points will win a special trophy and a cash prize.

• Elite Division - Participants in the Elite division will get to start in an Elite wave, which will be the first wave. Unlike many triathlons that limit the Elite wave to professional triathletes, the SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon will also allow fast amateur triathletes the opportunity to participate as Elite racers.

To commemorate participation in the first annual SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon, every finisher will receive a unique piece of jewelry designed specifically for the SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon.  Additionally, a portion of the proceeds from the SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon will be donated to the Teal Ribbon Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to raising funds to advance ovarian cancer research, advocate for early diagnostic treatment and to improve the lives of ovarian cancer survivors.

Race organizers are committed to putting on a first-class, high-quality event that transcends the race itself and leaves participants with an experience filled with lasting memories.
