Feb. 7, 2007 – Press release: The Michelob ULTRA London Triathlon is offering sightseeing fans the very best tour of London possible while competing in the world’s largest triathlon event. More than 10,000 triathletes from all over the world will experience a journey through the capital like no other as they compete in the 11th annual event from East to West London, passing historic monuments like Big Ben and Tower Bridge as well as the more modern London Eye, on August 4 and 5.
Among the thousands of swim, bike and run enthusiasts will be some of the world’s best triathletes. Racing around the cobbled streets in 2006, Henrich de Villiers beat world champion Tim Don and Olympic gold medalist Hamish Carter in the male elite field, and Andrea Whitcombe beat Sam Wariner in the female elite race.
The Michelob ULTRA London Triathlon itself is the perfect showcase event for spectators too, and around 40,000 people are expected to line the streets of London offering support to all athletes involved. The Michelob ULTRA London Triathlon broke all records for UK triathlon events last month by reaching capacity in the individual entries earlier than the end of January deadline as triathletes of all standards rushed to snap up the last few spaces -- two months earlier than in 2006.
The last-minute massive surge of calls from keen triathletes led to individual places disappearing before the deadline. Sport England figures that triathlon is still the UK’s fastest growing sport at an annual 10 percent growth rate.
London Triathlon Ltd.
